What is UGC-NET June 2026 Examination?

The UGC-NET (University Grants Commission โ€“ National Eligibility Test) is a crucial examination for Indian citizens aspiring to become Assistant Professors or pursue Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) in Indian universities and colleges. Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC), this test assesses the eligibility of candidates for these prestigious academic roles. The UGC-NET is held twice a year, typically in June and December, covering a wide array of subjects across various disciplines.

The UGC-NET is not a recruitment examination for specific vacancies but rather a qualifying test. Candidates who successfully clear the NET become eligible to apply for Assistant Professor positions in any Indian university or college, subject to fulfilling other institutional criteria. Those who qualify for JRF are eligible to receive fellowships for pursuing research in their chosen subjects, in addition to being eligible for Assistant Professorship. This examination is a gateway to a career in higher education and research, playing a vital role in maintaining standards of teaching and research across the country.

The June 2026 cycle of the UGC-NET examination, as announced by the NTA, presents another opportunity for eligible candidates to achieve their academic aspirations. With over 80 subjects offered, it caters to a diverse range of academic backgrounds, ensuring that specialists from various fields can pursue teaching and research careers. Candidates are strongly advised to thoroughly review the official notification and information bulletin for specific details related to their subject and eligibility.

  1. Written Examination: The UGC-NET consists of two papers:

    • Paper I: General Paper on Teaching and Research Aptitude. This paper is common for all candidates and assesses reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking, and general awareness. It contains 50 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), each carrying 2 marks.
    • Paper II: Subject-specific paper. This paper contains 100 MCQs, each carrying 2 marks, based on the subject chosen by the candidate.
    • Both papers are conducted in a single session, without any break. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers.
  2. Merit List Preparation: Based on the aggregate performance of candidates in both Paper I and Paper II, a merit list is prepared.

  3. Qualification for Assistant Professor:

    • The top 6% of the candidates who appear in both papers and secure the minimum qualifying marks are declared NET qualified for Assistant Professor.
    • The total slots for Assistant Professor are allocated among different categories (General, EWS, OBC, SC, ST, PwD, Third Gender) as per the Government of India's reservation policy.
  4. Qualification for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF):

  5. Document Verification: While NTA does not conduct document verification for the NET qualification, candidates who qualify for JRF or Assistant Professor will need to undergo document verification by the respective universities/colleges when they apply for positions or fellowships.

Salary and Pay Scale

The UGC-NET is a qualifying examination and does not directly lead to a salary or a specific pay scale from the NTA. However, qualifying the NET makes candidates eligible for the following:

  • Junior Research Fellowship (JRF):

    • Candidates awarded JRF receive a fellowship amount for pursuing research.
    • Expected Fellowship: Approximately โ‚น31,000 per month for the initial two years (JRF), and โ‚น35,000 per month for the subsequent years (Senior Research Fellowship - SRF), along with House Rent Allowance (HRA) and other contingencies as per UGC norms.
