PM Kisan Maandhan Yojana — Pension Scheme for Farmers

PM Kisan Maandhan Yojana (PMKMY) is a government pension scheme for small and marginal farmers in India. After age 60, you get ₹3,000 every month as pension. The government pays 50% of the contribution — you only pay a small amount every month.

This scheme was launched on 12 September 2019 by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare.

What is PM Kisan Maandhan Yojana?

PM Kisan Maandhan is a voluntary and contributory pension scheme. Here is how it works:

  • You pay a small monthly amount (₹55 to ₹200 depending on your age)
  • The government matches your contribution — pays the same amount
  • Both amounts go into a pension fund managed by LIC
  • After you turn 60 years old, you get ₹3,000 per month pension
  • Pension comes directly to your bank account

Simple example: If you join at age 18, you pay only ₹55/month. The government also puts ₹55/month. After age 60, you get ₹3,000/month for life.

Exit and Withdrawal Rules

If You Want to Leave Before Age 60

  • Before 10 years of joining: You get back only your contribution (the amount you paid) with savings bank interest rate
  • After 10 years but before age 60: You get back your contribution with accumulated interest (as earned by the pension fund) or savings bank interest, whichever is higher
  • If you don't pay regularly: Your account doesn't close immediately. You can pay the pending amount with interest and continue. Otherwise, the account will be closed and you get your share back.

If Subscriber Dies Before Age 60

  • The spouse (husband or wife) can choose to continue the scheme by paying the remaining contributions
  • If the spouse does not want to continue, the subscriber's share (contribution + interest) is returned

Family Pension (For Spouse)

This is an important benefit:

  • After the subscriber (pension holder) passes away after age 60, the spouse gets 50% of the pension amount — that is ₹1,500 per month as family pension
  • This family pension is only for the spouse — not for children or other family members
  • If both subscriber and spouse pass away, the entire money goes back to the pension fund

PM Kisan Maandhan vs Atal Pension Yojana (APY)

Many people ask — should I choose PM Kisan Maandhan or Atal Pension Yojana? Here is the comparison:
