What is an LPG Gas Connection?

An LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) connection allows you to receive cooking gas cylinders from one of India's three Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) — Indian Oil (Indane), Hindustan Petroleum (HP Gas), or Bharat Petroleum (Bharat Gas). Each household is entitled to one subsidised LPG connection, and you can now apply entirely online through the respective company portals.

Who Can Apply for a New LPG Connection?

  • Any Indian resident aged 18 years or above
  • The applicant must not already have an LPG connection in their name at the same address
  • Only one subsidised connection is allowed per household
  • Aadhaar card is mandatory for KYC and subsidy transfer (DBTL)

Important Tips

  • Link Aadhaar to your LPG connection to ensure subsidy is credited directly to your bank account via DBTL (PAHAL scheme)
  • One connection per household — duplicate connections may lead to cancellation and recovery
  • Keep your KYC updated — change of name, address, or bank details can be done online
  • You can port your connection from one OMC to another if needed, similar to a mobile number port

FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get a new LPG connection?

After successful document verification, the connection is typically delivered within 7 to 15 working days. The timeline depends on your distributor's queue and area.

Can I apply for a new LPG connection without Aadhaar?

Aadhaar is mandatory for KYC verification and for receiving the DBTL subsidy. Without Aadhaar, you cannot avail of the subsidised rate. You can apply for Aadhaar online if you don't have one.

What is the cost of a new gas connection?

The total upfront cost is approximately ₹1,600 to ₹2,200 including security deposit, regulator, and first refill for a 14.2 kg cylinder. Ujjwala beneficiaries get this free.

Can I have connections from two different companies?

No. A household is entitled to only one subsidised LPG connection. However, you can take a second connection on a non-subsidised (market price) basis from any OMC.

How do I check my LPG subsidy status?

Visit your OMC's website or the MyLPG.in portal and enter your consumer number to check subsidy credit status. You can also check via the PAHAL (DBTL) section on the respective OMC's site. Read our detailed LPG Subsidy & Ujjwala guide.

Can I change my LPG distributor?

Yes. You can request a change of distributor within the same OMC through the customer portal or by visiting the current distributor. For switching OMCs, a Transfer Voucher process applies.

What happens if I don't take a refill for a long time?

If no refill is booked for more than one year, the connection may be classified as dormant. You will need to contact your distributor to reactivate it with updated KYC.
